Today's upper 90's temperature made me think of my favorite thing about summer in New England: the swimming holes. A great online resource for maps and directions to swimming holes all over the US, not just Vermont, is www.swimmingholes.org. Many of the swimming holes listed for Vermont and New Hampshire are hidden bends in a river or a mountain stream that happens to turn into a waterfall, and its amazing to think about how people used to know about these places before the internet. Word of mouth can only travel so far, right?
Some of my favorite swimming holes: Twenty-Foot hole outside of Felchville, VT, the Sculptured Rocks in the White Mountains of NH, Bobbin Mill outside of Warren, VT, and Warren Falls, also outside of Warren, VT.
What's great about these hidden places is that you will often meet locals who, if you ask nicely, will tell you about other swimming holes that are still local secrets.

Winter is Finally Here!
Old Man Winter has finally made his way to Vermont, which is great news for all you skiers and snow-sport enthusiasts. Most of the local and regional ski resorts are running at full capacity, and the seemingly daily snow showers means the slopes are covered in powder. Quite a change from a few weeks ago when people were walking around downtown White River Junction in tee-shirts.
